Pownal Bay Bobbi impressed in Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots action at Georgina Downs on the card with a 1:52.3 victory in the first $25,000 third-leg division for two-year-old pacing fillies. She left quickest in the eight-horse field to take the lead and was in control throughout, pacing :28, :56.4, and 1:23.4 panels. P N G Shadow (Roy) rallied off the pylons from third on the final turn and made a strong bid down the stretch, but Pownal Bay Bobbi held on by a half-length. Horse With A Plan (Travis Cullen) was third.

Pownal Bay Bobbi broke her maiden in her fifth attempt for trainer Kyle Fellows. The daughter of Century Farroh-Bettorthanbobbi was a $17,000 London Classic Yearling Sale buy for Yolanda Fellows of Rockwood, Ont. and Blair Corbeil of Leduc, Alta. She returned $20.60 to her backers.

A pair of Ontario Sires Stakes Gold divisions shared the spotlight on Thursday (June 27) evening's card at Woodbine Mohawk Park as the sophomore males met for their second leg in the series. Each division carried a $95,000 purse.

Northern Looker posted the swiftest time with a 1:54 victory in his eight horse division.

Trevor Henry eased the Camilla Christoforou student out of post five and into fourth position off the car and into the first turn. Passing the :27.4 quarter, Northern Looker sat idly as the field shuffled around him. Northern Looker 'looked' on as he gained position in third through the :57.1 half. After the half mile marker, Henry made his move. Northern Looker achieved second from the outside on his first over journey by the time the three-quarters was reached in 1:26. With a :27.4 final panel, Northern Looker gained an advantage on the field to win by 1-1/4 lengths in 1:54. Finite (Louis-Philippe Roy) was second with What About Elmo (Tyler Jones) third.

Unraced as a freshman, the three-year-old Muscle Mass - Shestheonetowatch won his third race in five starts this year, banking $66,540 and producing a career best time in the mile. Charalambos Christoforou and Irvann Holdings Inc. co-own Northern Looker . He returned $19.50 as the 9-1 upset victor.

Delightful Leader took the second Prospect Series division of the Wednesday (Aug. 2) evening card at Grand River Raceway with Daryl Thiessen in the bike for trainer Melissa Lamoureux.

It Takes Two (Lorne House) was the pacesetter for the mile, leading the field of eight to the opening panel in :27.2 with Xtra Cheese (J Harris) along for the pocket ride. Delightful Leader followed in third up until the :56.4 half when he pulled first over. Delightful Leader led half of the field on an outer charge towards the leading It Takes Two as the third panel clicked in 1:25. It Takes Two met Delightful Leader in the stretch and Delightful Leader prevailed by three-quarters of length in 1:54.3. Holy Jalapeno (Scott Coulter) rounded out the top three.

Delightful Leader , a gelded son of Bettors Delight, is owned by 8113564 Canada Ltd as he moved his seasonal record to 7-4-3 in 22 starts. As a new career best time, it was also his seventh career victory. He paid $2.40 to win.

Dewiit For Josie zipped to the lead from post six in :26.3 and didn’t slow down for a beat, rolling home in a track record 1:49.3 in Wednesday’s $21,200 Filly & Mare Open Handicap Pace at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.

Dewitt For Josie threw down a swift 1:21.4 three-quarters for Dave Palone but still had enough in the tank to defeat Itty Bitty by four lengths, with Blue Ivy third. With that effort, the daughter of Sportswriter-Lucky Josie is now the fastest four-year-old mare pacer ever at The Meadows, lowering by a tick the 2012 mark of Camille.

The Sunshine Beach colt Ahi Sunshine blew away his rivals in the opening race of the Tuesday, June 6 card at Woodbine Mohawk Park in the opening division of the opening leg for the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots Series for pacing sophomore males.

Sent off as the 5-2 second choice, Ahi Sunshine swooped to the lead past a :27.1 first quarter to pocket Watchmaker and shuffle early leader Clown Car to third. He carried his speed up the backside to clock a :55.1 half and left his foes chasing from that point. Ahi Sunshine opened six lengths on his rivals to three-quarters in 1:23.2, widened to a 9-1/2-length lead in the stretch and coasted home a 6-3/4-length winner with Troubles A Brewin gaining ground to take second in the 1:51.1 mile. Gandolf The Black was third and Watchmaker settled for fourth.

David Drew manages Ahi Sunshine for owners Hudson Standardbred Stable Inc., Allen Sellen and Bridle Path Stables Ltd. The colt won his sixth race from 13 starts and has now earned $96,979. Bob McClure drove the $7.30 winner.

Nightime Dancer uncorked a 1:51.2 mile to take the second Grassroots division. The Rod Boyd-trained colt by Sunshine Beach sat fourth through a :26.4 quarter set by 8-5 favourite Ikes Dream before springing into action. Driver Jody Jamieson brushed Nightime Dancer to the fore following a :54.4 half and kept the colt plugging through three-quarters in 1:22.4 to win by 1-3/4 lengths over Artsalive, who rallied from a pylon trip for second. Sauble Ace hustled from the back for third.

Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots action for rookie pacing colts and geldings kicked off Thursday night (July 7) at Woodbine Mohawk Park, and first-crop sire All Bets Off earned his second OSS winner with Tignanello in the fourth of five divisions.

Sent the favourite, Sylvain Filion moved the Benoit Baillargeon trainee to the front from post six and led gate to wire in a time of 1:54.1.

“When Sylvain is the favourite, he puts them in play pretty good,” said Baillargeon. “Coming in I didn’t think a mile in 1:54 was out of reach for that colt tonight. He’s very good gaited and covers the ground easily.”

Tignanello set an identical closing panel of :27.3 in his qualifier victory on June 25.

“Hes out of a Somebeachsomewhere mare that won in 1:51, so there is speed in his family for sure,” said Baillargeon. “He trained down good all winter. It was not a problem to bring him to the races, and he was very willing to do his work.”

All Bets Off's first OSS winner was filly Big Big Plans in a gold division on Canada Day at the Campbellville oval.

Paul Reid trainee Teen Tattler was second in the penultimate Grassroots division with Scott Young in the race bike. The Canam Crew (Port Perry, Ont.) owns the Sportswriter colt. Watch My Chips finished third for Puslinch, Ont., trainer Scott Mceneny and his ownership partners Bradley Grant (Milton, Ont.) and Martwest Racing Stable (Mississauga, Ont.).

The Grassroots action commenced earlier in the evening in Race 2, where Slick N Quick won win his pari-mutuel debut with Filion driving.

Troubles A Brewin was sent to the front early by James MacDonald, and held the lead until the three-quarter pole after fending off a first up move from Morning Watch.

The field condensed as they turned for home, and Filion moved Slick N Quick up from seventh behind cover from Speak Of War and Better Option. The Julie Walker trainee moved six wide and sprinted down the lane to win by a neck with a final panel of :27.2.

“He seems very versatile,” said Walker. “He qualified off the front end, but that was just the circumstances of the fractions, and the speed we wanted to go that day, but he looked good tonight.”

Owner Joe Miskokomon (Muncey, Ont.) recently purchased the Sportswriter gelding from Carl Jamieson.

“Carl does a really good job getting them ready and educating them,” said Walker. “When we got him, it seems like he could have done anything already.”

Doug McNair got a pocket trip with Gandolf The Black and the Dominic Gladu trainee finished second for his TheStable.ca owners. Delightful Leader was third with Phillippe Hudon driving. Melissa Lamoreux trains for 8113564 Canada Ltd.

Erinwood Yves lowered two-year-old pacing colt track record at Flamboro

Flamboro Downs fans were treated to Gold Series action for both the two-year-old trotting colts and pacing colts on Sunday (Oct. 3) and, in spite of thick fog and heavy rain, the track records for both divisions had been rewritten by the night’s end.

Erinwood Yves lowered the two-year-old pacing colt track record with a gate-to-wire effort from post four that saw him sail under the wire 3-1/4 lengths the best in 1:53.1. Favourite Magical Arthur finished second and Betterhavemymoney rounded out the top three.

The mile, delivered over a rain-soaked surface that had been downgraded by one second to "good," lowered the previous track record of 1:53.3 set by Warrawee Needy in 2011.

“He’s an exceptional horse and he was on point tonight. Going into this race I felt pretty confident,” said trainer Gabriella Sasso of Erinwood Yves, who had not started since the August 14 Gold event. “We did skip the last Gold [September 4]. He didn’t come out of his last race 100 per cent, and we just wanted to have him as good as we could for this last Gold and the Super Final. We know that he’s excellent on a half, so we just backed him off, gave him a little paddock time, and had him ready for tonight.”

Louis-Philippe Roy piloted Erinwood Yves to his first Ontario Sires Stakes victory for Sasso and her husband Jeff Courchesne of Cambridge, Ont., and their co-owners Martwest Racing Stable and Erinwood Equine Inc. of Rockwood, Ont., who also bred the son of State Treasurer and Zayra Bayama.

“We’re just tickled with him. Erinwood pulled him out of the womb and I think it’s been a pretty exciting ride for them,” said Sasso, who was smitten with Erinwood Yves when she helped breeders Fiona Green and Andrew Carss with their 2020 yearling sale preparations and offered to go halves with them on the colt. “There was something about him, he was a little bit small, his pedigree was not super desirable, it was an unproven mare, but there was just something about him that spoke to me and I kind of thought he would be in our price range, so we made the deal and it worked out really, really well.”

Shezis A Beauty Repeats In Prospect

Shezis A Beauty earned her second Prospect Series victory with a front-end performance in Friday's $6,500 fifth leg for two-year-old filly pacers at Grand River Raceway.

Driven by Travis Henry, Shezis A Beauty left from post two and established the lead ahead of insider Mara Lou (Brett MacDonald) in the early going. The popular Gerard Demers trainee carved out fractions of :28.1, :57.2 and 1:26.3 en route to the one-length victory in 1:56.1. Mara Lou popped the pocket turning for home and was second-best while Million Angels (Steve Byron) followed in third along the pylons.

Shezis A Beauty was a 4-3/4-length winner when dropping out of the Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots to make her Prospect Series debut in the August 31 fourth leg at Georgian Downs. The Sportswriter-Keystone Eliza miss is now two-for-eight with $15,775 banked for owners Les Ecuries Gld Inc., and Jean Roch Marois.

She paid $3.50 to win as the 3-5 favourite.

Grand River will host the series finals for all divisions next Friday, Sept. 24.

Dewitt For Josie scored her third Grassroots win with an effortless front-end effort that saw her trip the timer at 1:57.2. Motovation and Mara Lou finished 1-1/2 lengths behind the fan favourites. Messiah wins Prospect Series Div. at Clinton Raceway

Messiah ($6.90), who dropped out of Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots competition to score a maiden-breaking victory with Doug McNair driving for his father, trainer Gregg McNair.

After 9-5 favourite Dont Poke The Bear (Jason Ryan) jumped it off in front of him on the final turn, Messiah rallied past the Tyler Moore-driven pacesetter, Two Drinks Ago (:31, 1:02.3, 1:32.3), to prevail by 2-1/4 lengths in 2:01.2. Shanghai Ky (Natasha Day) finished third.

The homebred Control The Moment-Virgin Mary colt, who kicked off his career with a pair of starts in the Grassroots Series, finished fifth in the July 19 leg at Grand River Raceway. The win was his first in four career starts for owner Howard Taylor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Prospect Series will continue with the fourth leg for freshman male pacers on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Kawartha Downs.

Ontario’s talented two-year-old pacing fillies returned to Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots action at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Friday, Aug. 13 and looked sharp in all five $22,150 divisions.

Favourite Dewitt For Josie scored her second Grassroots win in the fourth division, delivering a gritty effort up the outer lane that saw her squeak by pacesetter Novella Seelster at the 1:55.1 finish. A photograph was required to separate the duelling fillies, who finished one length ahead of St Lads Bijou.

“She’s a nice big filly. When I first sat behind her I was impressed,” said driver Louis-Philippe Roy of Guelph, Ont. “She is full of talent, but she sometimes lacks in her willingness. Tonight, she felt really good coming first up, I thought she would win easily, but she kind of stayed nose-to-nose with the leader.

“I’m happy with the win, but I think she has the talent to be more dominant,” he added.

Rockwood, Ont. resident Rene Bourassa trains Dewitt For Josie for Gilles Caouette of Sudbury, Ont. The Sportswriter daughter opened her career with a win in the July 6 Grassroots leg at Georgian Downs and Roy drove her for the first time in the July 18 Gold Series leg at Georgian, where she finished third.

Erinwood Yves Finishes Second In The 24th Annual Battle Of Waterloo

It was a picture perfect afternoon for the 31st annual Industry Day on Monday (Aug. 2) at Grand River Raceway. The 11-race card offered over C$720,000 in purses and the dashes for the cash certainly did not disappoint the fantastic crowd on hand.

24th Annual Battle Of Waterloo

A stellar field of nine Ontario Sired 2-year-old colts and geldings lined up behind the gate to battle for the lion’s share of over C$250,000.

Betterhavemymoney lived up to his heavy favorite status by capturing 2021 Battle Of Waterloo, just missing the track record by a fifth of a second in the process. Driver James MacDonald put the 2-year-old Betterthancheddar colt into play early, but faced a determined Erinwood Yves on the lead. The pair dropped the gloves to a :26.2 opening quarter before driver Jody Jamieson relinquished the lead to Betterhavemymoney. MacDonald grabbed a much needed middle half breather through fractions of :54.4 and 1:24.0, as he readied for a slugfest to wire with pocket sitter Erinwood Yves. Erinwood Yves popped the pocket and challenged the undefeated leader, but was unable to catch Betterhavemymoney in an incredible mile time of 1:52.4. Century Inspector took third while Stews Watching finished fourth.

“There’s no layups in this business. I knew I had the heavy favorite, but I thought if Jody [Jamieson and Erinwood Yves] got off the gate well he would be more than content to follow me, but he was going to make sure he made me pay the price,” MacDonald said after the race. “Kudos to Gabby [Sasso] – she’s got a good barn of horses and that horse raced terrific. I think the world of my horse, and he got stretched hard and I had to push him, and he was right there at the wire.

“I mean it’s huge – any time you get a crack at some of these signature events, you’ve got to take advantage of them,” MacDonald also said. “Nick [Gallucci] did a great job. He had the horse ready, and the horse just did it all. I’m really happy for everyone involved, and I’m happy to see a good crowd here today at Grand River. It’s really awesome.”

Jamieson Poised For ‘Battle’ Sweep

Jody Jamieson is excited to hit the track at Grand River Raceway for this year’s edition of Industry Day, and those reasons transcend the fact that he’s coming into the main events with horses that won eliminations of both the Battle of the Belles and Battle of Waterloo.

“I think it’s a great lineup,” said Jamieson of his nine races on the holiday Monday at Grand River Raceway. Of those nine drives, four of them come aboard horses that are picked for first or second on the morning line: Ontario Sires Stakes Gold competitor Dabarndawgswatchin (8-5)in Race 3, OSS Grassroots starter Sports Duchess (5-2) in Race 6, Battles of the Belles elim winner Warrawee Xpat (2-1) in the $145,060 Battle of the Belles Final in Race 10 and stablemate Erinwood Yves (2-1) in the $251,050 Battle of Waterloo Final.

A $6,000 Ontario Selected sale yearling, Warrawee Xpat (Sportswriter - Greenwich Girl) captured her Battle of the Belles elimination in 1:55.4 for her second win in her first three starts. Gabrielle Sasso trains the filly for Jeffrey Courchesne of Cambridge and Martwest Racing Stable of Mississauga, Ont.

Jamieson was impressed with her performance and is eager to see what she can do in the finals. “She was great, and we got to control the race. I don’t suspect we’ll be able to control the finals. Whether I want the lead or not, I’ll have to go a bit more because anytime you put big money on the line it turns into a good race. She was slower than the other elimination winner, but she was a winner all the same. She’s a nice filly and doesn’t do anything wrong.”

Warrawee Xpat drew post position three and Jamieson is not too concerned about the filly’s chances. “It’s a real good spot at Grand River. On a half-mile track, you often want the rail, but the middle of the track is a really good spot to be when you have a leaver. I’m going to let her leave as much as she can. I’m pretty confident in her and I think she has a lot more to offer.”

Jamieson sends out Erinwood Yves for the same connections plus co-owner Erinwood Equine in the 2021 Battle of Waterloo. The son of State Treasurer - Zayra Bayama got his first lifetime win in the Battle elimination where he paced the mile in 1:55.1. The $12,000 Ontario Select purchase hasn’t missed the board in three starts and sports $45,306 in purses from that trifecta of appearances.

Jamieson and his equine teammate sat the pocket in his elimination, although Erinwood Yves might have preferred to win a different way.

“He was really bionic. He paced out of there like a champ. He really didn’t like the hole, but we were locked in until the stretch. He was just awesome in his elimination.”

Erinwood Yves is the slight second choice on the morning-line odds behind 7-5 favourite Betterhavemymoney (PP5, James MacDonald) who won the other elimination in 1:54.2.

“I’m expecting a good effort from him for sure. If he gets his shot, I think he’s good enough to win the race.”

Jamieson has had plenty of success on Industry Day and recalls many fond memories of his time at both Elmira Raceway and Grand River Raceway on the first Monday in August.

“It’s always special to capture the Battle of Waterloo and to win the last race of the day. I won it a couple of years ago with my dad’s horse [Sports Obsession in 2019] and that one was extra special.”

The last year and a half has been far from normal and that certainly is not any different in the harness racing world. The lack of live crowds has been noticed by those who put on the show, and Jamieson is looking forward to a live crowd for the 2021 edition of Industry Day.

“It really sucked racing with no fans. I know we needed to race and as an industry, we did whatever we needed to do to race. To have them back now is amazing and even the first day with only a few owners back at the track made the atmosphere that much better.” Jamieson is known for taking the winning horse up to the fence and that gives the fans a chance to say hello and get up close to the on-track athletes. “I love taking the winning horse along the fence to let the fans get a good look. It’s a chance to give back to the people who come out.”

Jamieson will have a long day of work as he will have to make the 40-minute drive to Woodbine Mohawk Park immediately after. Between the two cards, Jamieson will have 17 drives on the day. The workload does not bother Jamieson at all and he’s just happy to be a part of it. “That’s just what I do. It’s my job and this time of year you just race as much as you can.”

Erinwood Yves Captures The Battle Of Waterloo Elim.

Erinwood Yves ($4.80) rode the pocket and rolled up the open stretch to capture the other Waterloo elimination in 1:55.1 at Grand River Raceway, breaking his maiden in the act. Jody Jamieson situated the son of State Treasurer and Zayra Bayama behind early pacesetter Century Inspector (Moore) through a :27.4 first quarter, and the pair remained glued on Century Inspector's helmet through middle fractions of :57.1 and 1:26.3. Despite being boxed in by the first-over Ron (Roy) through the second circuit, Erinwood Yves was able to accelerate quickly enough up the open stretch to find the winning post in time, collaring Century Inspector by a head in 1:55.1. Ron finished third, three lengths behind; Sports Box (Trevor Henry) was fourth despite failing to sustain a three-wide bid on the home turn.

Gabriella Sasso trains Erinwood Yves, who had previously finished second and third in two Gold events, for Erinwood Equine Inc., Jeffrey Courchesne and the Martwest Racing Stable.
